I loved my first apartment. The ninth floor was the perfect height to be able to gaze out at the other high rises yet still have a great view of the hustle and bustle below.
All seven hundred square feet were mine to decorate as I pleased. And though the bare walls and empty floors looked like they could easily accommodate all the grand plans I had in mind, I was sorely mistaken.
Bulky furniture wasn’t an option unless I wanted only a narrow path to traverse from the kitchen to the bedroom. Sleek furnishings just didn’t provide enough storage.
What was a gal to do?
Enter the floating trend, a unique design choice that provides storage with a minimal footprint. The term floating is just another way to describe wall-mounted, but it makes it sound so much chicer. You can wall-mount nearly anything, from vanities to shelving. Below are some great floating options to make your apartment feel open without skimping on places to store your belongings.
Floating Shelves
Perhaps the most popular pieces of the trend, floating shelves come in various sizes and forms. The biggest benefit of a floating shelf is that they free up floor space. While a hutch or table offers you somewhere to set your books or display your collections, the room they require can overwhelm a small space. You also have to navigate around these pieces of furniture when you are moving through a room.
Wall-mounted shelves provide you with the same surface to set your stuff without occupying a spot on the floor. They make the most of your vertical space too. Aside from the storage, these shelves can really complement a room. They can easily be used as a focal point if you arrange them strategically.

Floating shelves can be short or long, and the thickness of the shelf can vary. Some cost under ten dollars, an inexpensive way to make a big impact in your apartment. You can mount them one under the other or stagger them. A distinctive feature of these shelves is that they can be mounted at nearly any height.

Unlike tables or other furniture that typically stands at waist height, shelves can be placed low or high. A shelf that resides barely off the ground can hold storage that is bulky or a little unsightly while higher shelves are great for displaying art or collections. Shelves can even be next to a seating area and at the perfect height to serve as a side table. The kitchen is another spot where you can use them to store dishware or backlight them and use them as a bar to hold your favorite beverages.

The uses for floating shelves are abundant, as are the styles they come in. Though wood is the most common, metal is also popular. Mirrored shelves, shelves hung by a rope, and corner options all make wonderful design elements that amp up bare walls.

You will be surprised how much good a little foot room can do for your small space. Wall-mounted dressers and desks give you the perfect spot to store items and also put your feet.
Floating dressers are one of my favorite options in the bedroom. A dresser with room underneath is so much more practical than traditional ones that have only enough space for dust bunnies. This allows for room to store trendy canvas baskets, shoes, or anything else that needs a home.

The bedroom lends itself to other floating options as well. A wall-mounted desk has a slim profile and works well in a small space. A chair fits easily under the desk but the surface performs equally as well as a shelf when not in use. Floating bedside tables fit nicely into narrow areas where there is little floor space.

Floating furniture and shelves are often visually striking. Their design appeals to those who favor a minimal and modern look, but they can also complement rustic and natural themes. The use of wall-mounted furniture helps open up cramped rooms, making them feel airier. Aside from maximizing your vertical space and floor space, they are so much easier to clean underneath! The advantages of using this stylish method in your apartment are endless.
